In the early part of 1990, a small and enthusiastic group of music-loving persons met with Harry Jacobs in the home
of Dr. William Boyd to discuss the possibility of forming a high quality chamber music series which would honor
Maestro Jacobs and be led by him.  At that meeting, the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society was formed.
Within a very short time, the Society had over 200 members, and it was accepted as a stellar addition to the fine arts
organizations of the CSRA.  Harry would be happy to witness our success, as we are happy that his legacy lives!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE / ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear Chamber Music Lovers!
I urge you to join one of the very best buys in
Augusta -- membership in the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society.  There are no obligations except to purchase your season ticket as part of your membership at 60% of what tickets sold at the door cost.  (Of course, you can always buy tickets at the box office on the night of the concerts at $25 for adults and $7 for school-age children.)  What you receive with membership are tickets to six of the finest chamber music concerts available by world-class artists, many from Europe.  Look over our list of artists for 2008-2009 and you will see what I mean.  All groups are carefully chosen after lengthy examination of their recordings, biographies and reviews and given final approval by our Music Committee comprised of accomplished musician-members. Our visiting artist-musicians are expensive, but I want to present only the best.  Memberships and ticket sales only pay for about half of our budget, but we rely on donations, sponsorships and grants to keep us in the black.

Please feel free to call me or any of the officers, board and
volunteers, and we will be happy to chat with you.  I can also send you programs of past concerts and a 19th Season brochure.

We look forward to having you in our audience!!

Musically yours,
Dr. Alan Drake, Executive/Artistic Director

WHAT IS CHAMBER MUSIC?

Chamber Music America defines chamber music as "music written for small ensembles, whose members generally perform one to a part without a conductor."

At the heart of chamber music lies the spirit of collaboration and the role of the individual performer. Chamber music places the highest order of responsibility upon the individual to engage in a close musical dialogue with the other performers. As a collaborative expression, chamber music relies upon the collective musical instincts, experience, knowledge and talents of its participants to guide the process of interpreting, rehearsing and performing a composer's creation.

Historically, chamber music has referred to Western classical music written for small ensembles such as the string quartet. Today, however, many different kinds of musical styles and ensembles thrive in the diverse world that is chamber music.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there reserved seating ?

There is no official reserved seating.

What should I wear ?

Wear whatever you feel is appropriate.  You will see dress ranging from formal suits to very casual.

When should I applaud ?

The musicians usually perform two pieces prior to intermission and one afterward.  Each piece consists of movements and these will all be listed in the program.  It is appropriate to not applaud between movements, but rather wait to show your appreciation by applauding at the end of the piece.

How long does the concert last ?

Usually not long enough for chamber music fans! The concerts are normally over at 10:00 or so.  There are security officers on the premises during the entire concert.

TICKETING PROCEDURE AND PRICING
TICKETS (Non-Members):
The Maxwell Theatre has initiated a system in which everyone must have a ticket for each event.  Those who wish to buy a non-member ticket for an event may purchase it at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre’s box office the night of the concert or earlier.  The price will be $25 for adults and $7 for school-age children.  Tickets may be charged with credit cards, but a fee will be added.  We pay the Georgia state tax on these separate (non-member) tickets, but we absorb the cost.

MEMBERSHIPS:
Memberships must be purchased directly from the Society – MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION.
Every member will now have a ticket for each concert.
We plan to enclose these tickets when we respond to your membership checks.  Every ticket will have the same price, $15.  For a Double Membership (2 persons), there will be 12 tickets (2 for each concert), and the price will be $180.  For a Single Membership (1 person), there will be 6 tickets (1 for each concert), and the price will be $90.  TO BYPASS THE BOX OFFICE LINE, YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR TICKET TO THE CONCERT !

CONTRIBUTIONS:
In spite of ever-rising costs for artists, printing, publicity, and mailings, etc., the Board is hopeful that contributions and grants will increase, making up the difference between ticket income and expenses.  Contributions of any amount will be gladly accepted.  We encourage members to become co-sponsors for a $1,000 or more contribution.  Sponsors will be credited in the programs, and sponsors may request that their sponsorship be for a concert of their choice.

Without your loyalty to the Society, we could not continue to bring you world-class chamber music.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

Mindful of a shared human need to find meaning and to sort the discoveries of our senses accordingly, we become aware and respond to sound, for example—eventually noting at some level the sounds which we find comfortable as well as those which cause us to cover our ears.  A soft, loving coo from a dove or a loud, spooky blast from a foghorn set up contrasting effects.  Unforgettable auditory memories are built into our systems by cognition and association.

Not unlike other deposits, interest accrues benefit across time.  Our untrained ear, regardless of age—barring limitation by deafness, trauma or ridicule early on—gradually learns to select and to classify the versatile language of sound.  There has been no era so barren that people have not found musical interests.  And today we recognize examples of music from folk and regional and ethnic sources, and have gained a broad array of refined instruments for producing and recording sound.  Rhythm and dance, the human voice, harmonies and choir, opera and operetta, music as therapy occupy us directly.

But, we in the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society are passionate about chamber music.  Chamber Music of top caliber performed live in the Performing Arts Theatre at Augusta State University.  Six concerts in our series, annually, selected through study of the CD’s submitted by established artists and ensembles.

We invite the attendance of all who are willing to believe that our performances and the dedicated artists who deliver such magical acoustic chamber fulfillment will raise their quality of life.  Please join us now so that we have your company in the complete season.

Dr. Sam Hunter, President
