Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary
In the early part of 1990, a small and enthusiastic group of music-loving persons met with Harry Jacobs in the home
of Dr. William Boyd to discuss the possibility of forming a high quality chamber music series which would honor
Maestro Jacobs and be led by him.  At that meeting, the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society was formed.
Within a very short time, the Society had over 200 members, and it was accepted as a stellar addition to the fine arts
organizations of the CSRA.  Harry would be happy to witness our success, as we are happy that his legacy lives!

Bring your Valentine along & join us Friday, February 12,
when HJCMS presents Millennium Brass,
an American brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba)
who will perform classical quintets, ragtime, and a variety of other styles.

Dr. Alan Drake retired May 1, 2009, as Artistic Director after serving in this position since 2001.  The groups for the upcoming 2009-2010 Season were chosen by Dr. Drake.  The Society will be forever grateful for Dr. Drake’s tireless dedication in bringing world-class artist-musicians to Augusta.

The Society is pleased to welcome Dr. Quentin Kuyper and Dr. Linda Banister as our new Co-Artistic Directors.  Drs. Kuyper and Banister have already shown much enthusiasm for continuing the Society’s mission of presenting excellent Chamber Music to our community.   Please go to our “Artistic Directors” page to learn more about Quentin and Linda.

The Society extends a special thanks to Dr. Sam Hunter for devotedly serving as President of the Society for the past three years.  We welcome Fritz Wurzinger as President for the 2009-10 Season.

LETTER TO MEMBERS from Quentin Kuyper & Linda Banister

Harry Jacobs was a fine musician.  We feel privileged to have known him, albeit for too short a time.  As a professional-level performer, inveterate teacher, and musical entrepreneur, he directly influenced the beginnings of much of the flourishing arts community of Augusta.  Because of him and the vision of the founding members, the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society has had a significant impact on the musical environment of the CSRA for the past 19 years.

Those foresighted founders created an organization with a long-term mission to bring nationally and internationally acclaimed chamber music to the area at an affordable price, and it has succeeded admirably.  The musicians and ensembles who have performed for us include many who have gone on to be important names in music.  Our memories of their performances will always be with us.

We would like to thank the Society for giving us the opportunity to help plan the future of the series.  As we shoulder some of the responsibilities for organizing this year and planning for next year we face two significant challenges:  maintaining both the quality of the performances and the financial health of the Society.  Those challenges are both affected negatively by the current economic climate of the times, but we are confident that with your assistance and support we can succeed on both accounts.

“Chamber Music” can be many things.  String quartets, piano trios, and other similar ensembles can sustain us esthetically for a long time, and we expect to continue to engage the best of these groups that we can afford.  We also expect to continue the pattern already established of having at least one concert per season to include an ensemble that expands these musical boundaries.  Harry, with his wide range of interests, would love that.

This twentieth season of the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Series has great variety and award-winning ensembles.  Enjoy the concerts, bring your friends, and tell everyone about Harry and his enduring contribution in our area.  Your membership, attendance, and support will help to perpetuate the Society’s tradition of great chamber music experiences.

TICKETS (Non-Members):
The Maxwell Theatre has initiated a system in which everyone must have a ticket for each event.  Those who wish to buy a non-member ticket for an event may purchase it at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre’s box office the night of the concert or earlier.  The price will be $25 for adults and $7 for school-age children.  Tickets may be charged with credit cards, but a fee will be added.  We pay the Georgia state tax on these separate (non-member) tickets, but we absorb the cost.

Every member will now have a ticket for each concert.  We plan to enclose these tickets when we respond to your membership checks.  Every ticket will have the same price, $15.  For a Double Membership (2 persons), there will be 12 tickets (2 for each concert), and the price will be $180.  For a Single Membership (1 person), there will be 6 tickets (1 for each concert), and the price will be $90.  TO BYPASS THE

WHAT IS CHAMBER MUSIC?

Chamber Music America defines chamber music as "music written for small ensembles, whose members generally perform one to a part without a conductor."

At the heart of chamber music lies the spirit of collaboration and the role of the individual performer. Chamber music places the highest order of responsibility upon the individual to engage in a close musical dialogue with the other performers. As a collaborative expression, chamber music relies upon the collective musical instincts, experience, knowledge and talents of its participants to guide the process of interpreting, rehearsing and performing a composer's creation.

Historically, chamber music has referred to Western classical music written for small ensembles such as the string quartet. Today, however, many different kinds of musical styles and ensembles thrive in the diverse world that is chamber music.
